The Metropolitan Opera is a new place. And it's brilliant. People are actually excited about opera. I went to the opening night and felt like I was at the Oscars.

And a guitar arrived at my office today, addressed to me. It was sent by my Grandpa who wants me to be a folk singer.

Now I'm all set, with my guitar and my cowboy hat.

so i kinda sorta have a "date" with sam ramey.
he's singing in the city opera gala and his wife is staying in DC with his son (where he's doing a double-bill with the WNO). i asked sam for the name of his guest so i could make his arrangements for comp tickets and the post-performance dinner. he said i could have all of his comps and he didn't have a guest to bring to the dinner unless i wanted to be his guest. ummm, ok!!! haha.
and flicka sent me a cowboy hat from "country nashville" just to say thanks...
i'm in disbelief. too bad i have to work long days making up itneraries and booking flghts. i need a vacation. oh wait- i just took one and fell so behind that i vowed to never take one again...

I've been so busy at work lately. One of the other assistants in our division left so I temporarily have 9 new clients. That makes 28 total. Crazy! I will lose some once we hire a replacement. I am working with Frederica (Flicka) von Stade and Samuel Ramey right now. I'll hopefully get to keep them on my list. Soooo exciting.

I have to go relax no, before I explode.

radiohead was amazing. nyc was very different than philly. philly had good sound and i had a great view in a second row seat. nyc was louder and cramped but i was only five heads back and thom really gave it his all. the whole band was really into it.
thom posted this online:

"this'll make you laugh.
i was told yesterday that one of the daughters of the president came to NY show 2.
we were playing THe Tourist at the end of the show.. and yyes we did wander what the shuffling manhandling fighting was in the distance of the audience.
turns out it was her 6 bodyguards clearing the way for the first daughters exit. and some pour soul objected at being manhandled by the secret service. i think i would have to.

infact if i had known all this my objections would have been more forthright and extensive...if you know what i mean. which is perhaps why our lot chose not to tell me who was in the building before we went on. probably a good idea.

hmm
i dont know if we should be

A. honoured
B. amused
C. bemused
D. ask if she had a valid ticket
E. object belatedly on moral grounds
F. ask again if she had a ticket and question whether this really what our gigs are about
G. dont blame the daughter for the father
H. shutup and smile

answers on a postcard

bonaroo today woo hoo

Thom

i love that when thom sang, "bring down the government, they don't speak for us" the nyc crowd went wild. ha!!!!!!

i took a dance class this weekend. it was modern and "roots", as in african. it was fun but i think i threw my arms out of their sockets a few times. now i hurt.
i am getting antsy. antsy at work, in my apt.... i've been watching movies and 'sex and the city' and drinking wine.
i don't have many friends here and don't really know how to meet people. i really want to meet a guy. but i don't want to pay to meet anyone. i don't have much money to go out much and i especially don't have money to join a dating website like match.com, etc. my student loans kick in this month. we're talking $400 a month.
so here i am listening to joni mitchell in my hot nyc apt. without air conditioning. by myself.

I'm finally moving to NYC (Manhattan) on April 1st!!!!!!! Less than a week!!!! It will be so nice to have a 30 min. commute to work instead of 2+ hours.

My rent is amazingly cheap. Only twice what I've been paying to commute.

I'm so excited to be out of my parents' house and closer to work.

Now I just have to find/buy some furniture and pack like crazy.

today i again joined the herd of commuters rushing to their trains. we scurry past a frail man who plays "the ants go marching" on a recorder. he's there every day. the high, held notes are about a quarter-tone flat. it drives me crazy.

things are going pretty well at work. i have a much better handle on things. the thing that stresses me out the most is understanding who people are when they call for my boss. most have thick accents and act like they're soooo important and why don't i know who they are?!?! barf.

one of my clients asked me how to pronounce my last name. he said, "feel free to use IPA ;-)". i wrote out my name in IPA, scanned it, and sent the file to him. it was awesome.

i am really getting along with most people at work. the other female assistant in my department wears the same size clothing/shoes as me which should be fun.

one of my clients, a regular at the Met, asked me very last-minute to be his guest at a Metropolitan Opera Donor dinner at the Four Seasons. i went on monday. it was fun, although strange (my date was MUCH older than me). luckily, i had an appropriate dress. Pamina from Die Zauberflote (which i just saw recently) wants my dress for a St. Patty's day gig coming up. they split all the couples up so that we'd meet people; i sat next to a well-known donor and another Met singer. i had a lot in common with the donors; we talked about how kids these days listen to terrible music and don't even know who Gershwin and Porter are...yeah, i felt old. although, they spoke about their summer homes in france while i live at home with my parents- haha. rolando villazon sang a few songs/arias which was sooo awesome because our table was right up front. his voice is HUGE. he was so overly expressive; it was almost comical. but he's great. my colleague went to the Petrushka Ball on Friday (and a fashion show last week) as Anna Netrebko's date. crazy!!! she's a celebrity everywhere except in the US. of course.

so far today has been the best day i've had in a long time...
i woke up
tried to ignore all of the construction vehicles and increased traffic
went to Target briefly
grabbed a Luna Bar at Wild by Nature
went to "the place"
read a book in the sun on a huge rock
wandered through a bamboo forest
observed some ducks
drove back home with the sun roof open blasting old-school R.E.M.
i love this weather.

i might take a ballet class later. i haven't taken a ballet class in nearly 7 years! just jazz, tap, modern, and "dance for the musical stage". should be interesting.

my room is finally all set. there is actually space to do yoga!

*brokeback mountain was incredible. about an hour after the movie, i started crying again. that doesn't happen too often. jake gyllenhaal is gorgeous. (he was on my fridge all summer, hehe, thanks meryn!)

*phone interview is done. went well but who knows.

*network night was a disappointment but i got to spend time with some friends from IC...it was a real good time. i got the names of a couple new job websites (and a gentle facial cleanser) to check out.

*i like the word "guffaw".

Happy New Year!

i had a good time in albany with some friends, old and new.

it's really raining outside! i suppose it's snowing like crazy in places like ithaca.
our chimney has an issue...every time it rains, water gets in our house. a LOT of water. my dad has no plans to get it repaired. what else is new.

i framed a few opera/choral posters from IC and i'll be framing one from high school...
still working on cleaning out my closet/room. i have so much stuff!!!!!!!

the motorcycle diaries is a great film. makes me want to travel and get the hell outta here.

i love this new yarn i got- definitely "teal magic"

larrin and i were so funny in michael's- carrying tons of yarn, deciding which ones were on sale...we are little old ladies and i like it

going to albany for new year's- should be a good time!

i keep procrastinating but i REALLY need to clean out my closet and unpack my things. i guess i was hoping i would never have to unpack but it doesn't look like i'll be moving out for some time

i saw 2 friends that i hadn't seen forever- maybe since HS graduation
it was awesome

[mood | pensive]

i've been reading a lot and watching dvds and knitting and organizing but that gets old
i watched the entire first season of curb your enthusiasm tonight- very funny but watching that show makes me so tense! larry david reminds me of my crazy grandpa in florida.
i've only seen 2 friends since i've been home.
i went into nyc with my whole family- that was quite an adventure
my mom was about 30 feet behind us the whole time, even when we tried to walk slowly
my brother got locked into a bathroom stall somehow in penn station and he also managed to walk into a stall where "a fat man was peeing"
we saw fiddler on the roof- it was ok. listening to harvey feirstein makes my throat hurt. i really wanted to see fledermaus but apparently my family isn't into opera as much as i thought they were. maybe that's why they never came to see me at glimmerglass. awesome.
i feel like such a waste of space
i don't know how much longer i can stay here without a job or something to really keep me occupied...one interview and two pending.
i don't know what to do for new year's.

[mood | nostalgic]

so i am a college graduate, with two degrees!

it is sooo sad to see everyone leaving and to be leaving myself. i spent the last four and a half years in ithaca; i really don't know what i'll do without wegman's, taste of thai, the waterfalls, the moosewood, the commons, my voice teacher, a spacious apartment, my closest friends...

it just hit me like a wall that this is the end.

i wish i had something to look forward to. i will not be able to live at home for very long so something better come along soon.

one interview thursday and another on its way...
